Unlike traditional x-rays, which provide static images, ultrasounds allow us to monitor how organs like the heart and lungs are functioning and identify any potential issues in the abdominal area. This helps us make informed diagnoses and provide effective treatment plans.
How Ultrasound Works for Your Pet
Ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to create images of the inside of your pet’s body. We start by applying alcohol and a cool gel to the area being examined, ensuring good contact between the ultrasound probe and your pet’s skin. The probe sends out sound waves, which bounce back and form an image of the area being looked at. This process is similar to the one used in human pregnancy ultrasounds but is completely safe and comfortable for your pet.
What to Expect from the Ultrasound Experience
We aim to make the ultrasound procedure as easy and stress-free as possible for both you and your pet. Here's what you can expect during the procedure:
- Initial Gel/Rubbing Alcohol Application: We will apply a special gel and rubbing alcohol to the skin to facilitate the smooth movement of the ultrasound probe and improve contact of the probe with the skin directly underneath their fur.
- Real-Time Imaging: The ultrasound probe will create real-time images of your pet's internal organs, allowing us to monitor functions like heartbeat and lung activity.
- Painless and Comfortable: The procedure is completely painless, and our team will work to keep your pet calm and comfortable throughout.
- Quick and Efficient: The entire procedure typically takes less than an hour.
- Optional Sedation: If your pet becomes anxious, we may discuss the possibility of using a light sedative, but only with your full approval.
Benefits of Combining Ultrasound with X-Rays
In some cases, combining ultrasound with x-ray imaging provides the most complete and accurate picture of your pet's health. While ultrasounds allow us to observe real-time organ function, x-rays offer clear, static images that can reveal structural issues. This combined approach ensures that we don’t miss any details, helping us give you the most accurate diagnosis and treatment options for your pet.
General Information
Ultrasound is carried out in a quiet, slightly darkened room. Because it’s painless and non-invasive, most patients are awake during the procedure. If there is concern about comfort and/or aggression, sedation might be recommended to keep your pet and our staff safe.
It is recommended to withhold food after 10 p.m. the night before your pet’s appointment. If your pet has breakfast, the food in the stomach may impede visualization of abdominal organs. It may also prevent sedation, if required.
To allow for good contact of the ultrasound probe, it may be necessary to shave pets in the area where they are to be examined. This is completely normal and of no need for concern.
