Internal Medicine for Complex Conditions
Interal medicine is a vital component of general practice. At TotalBond, we treat internal medicine cases such as kidney disease, liver disease, diabetes, cushings disease, addison’s disease, hypothyroid, etc. These case involve complex work ups including basic blood work, more complex blood tests, and imaging such as x rays and ultrasound. At TotalBond, we are willing to take on complex cases and provide them with the care they need. We do work with several specialists in the area for guidance or referral with extremely complex cases.
Board-Certified Expertise in Canine & Feline Care
We are particularly fortunate to have Dr. Dick Hay, a Diplomate of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners—the highest credential for a primary care veterinarian—on our team. As Davidson’s only Board-Certified Specialist in Canine & Feline Practice, Dr. Hay brings extensive expertise in both medicine and surgery. Alongside him, our doctors and staff are highly trained and experienced in managing even the most complex acute and chronic care conditions. When a case requires additional expertise, we also consult and refer within a trusted network of specialists across a variety of fields.
Dermatology
Dermatology is the study of the skin, with the diagnosis and treatment of a large range of diseases and afflictions. The skin, being the largest organ of the body, is its first line of defense. Animals may suffer from allergies, skin cancer, parasitic infections, hair loss, and other issues that include the nails and ears. Timely and consistent treatment can reduce the spread of infection and lessen the suffering. It is also important to note that, depending on the type of skin infection, they may be spread to other animals and/or human family members. We deal with dermatology issues every day and have a lot of tools to help make your fur baby feel better. However, if they are not responding to our therapies or have a very serious condition our doctors can direct you to a veterinary dermatologist who will help.
Cardiology
Veterinary cardiology specializes in the heart and circulatory system. The focus is on diagnosing and treating disease of the heart and lungs, which include: congestive heart failure, age-related heart valve changes, heart muscle diseases, congenital defects, arrhythmias, tumors, hypertension, pulmonary hypertension, and coughing/breathing problems. Our doctors are great at diagnosing heart murmurs early which is the first sign of heart disease. We can perform the basic starting tests to determine treatment for heart disease such as chest x rays and a blood pressure check. The ultimate test for heart disease is an echocardiogram. TotalBond Veterinary Hospital at Davidson can refer you to a specially trained cardiologist to perform an echocardiogram and care for more advanced, unstable cardiac disease as needed.
Endocrinology
Endocrinology is concerned with the system of glands that secrete functional hormones. A number of recurring symptoms may come to your attention if your pet is experiencing an endocrine disorder. Some of these symptoms can include a noticeable increase or decrease in thirst, excessive or infrequent urination, sudden weight gain or loss, lethargy or weakness, hair loss or thinning, vision disturbance, and persistent panting. Please monitor your pet carefully for these changes and bring them in if you start to notice them. We will perform a good exam, blood work, and potentially additional testing to determine the underlying cause and provide you and your pet with medication to get your pet back to feeling their best!
Ophthalmology
We diagnose and manage a wide range of eye conditions, including glaucoma, cataracts, dry eye, and conjunctivitis. Our diagnostic tools include tear production testing, corneal staining, and tonometry to measure eye pressure. These evaluations help us accurately identify the problem and create a treatment plan focused on preserving vision and improving comfort.
Kidney Disease
Many senior dogs and cats develop some level of kidney dysfunction over time, but early detection and proper management can greatly improve both quality and length of life. That’s why routine screening tests are so important. Our in-house laboratory can identify early signs of kidney disease and even detect patients who may be at higher risk in the coming years. If kidney disease is diagnosed, our doctors will create a personalized long-term care plan focused on slowing progression and supporting your pet’s overall health and comfort at every stage.
Bladder Disease
Bladder conditions in pets range from urinary tract infections and bladder or kidney stones to feline idiopathic cystitis in cats. Using a combination of medical history, physical examination, laboratory testing, and diagnostic imaging, we can accurately diagnose and manage the most common urinary issues in both dogs and cats.
Neurology
We evaluate and manage a wide range of neurological conditions, including seizure disorders, herniated discs, and nerve-related problems. Through detailed medical history, physical exams, and in-house laboratory and radiology services, we can diagnose and treat many common neurological cases.
If a pet shows signs of progressive paralysis or a suspected brain disorder, advanced imaging—such as CT or MRI—may be recommended through referral to a board-certified neurologist at a specialty center in Mooresville.
Liver Disease
The liver plays a major role in detoxification and many other essential body functions. Changes in liver enzymes and related lab values can often signal underlying concerns before visible symptoms appear. For suspected liver conditions, our doctors rely on laboratory testing and diagnostic imaging to evaluate function and determine the next steps. When specialized care is needed, we may recommend referral to a board-certified oncologist at a referral center in Charlotte or Matthews.
