Zenrelia and Vaccines:What Dog Owners Need to Know

The team at TotalBond Veterinary Hospital at Paw Creek would like to share an important update regarding the medication Zenrelia, which many of our canine patients take to help control itching and inflammation associated with allergic and atopic dermatitis.

Previous Guidance on Zenrelia and Vaccines

When Zenrelia was first introduced, the prescribing information recommended that dogs discontinue the medication prior to vaccination. This guidance was based on early vaccine-response studies that raised concerns about how the drug might affect immune responses.

These studies suggested that dogs receiving Zenrelia at the time of vaccination could have an inadequate immune response. In some cases, there were also concerns about potential vaccine-related illness.

New Research and Updated Findings

Recently, representatives from Elanco Animal Health, the manufacturer of Zenrelia, visited our hospital group to present updated research and additional data regarding the medication and vaccination safety.

These newer studies show that healthy dogs receiving Zenrelia at the time of vaccination do mount an appropriate immune response. Researchers concluded that the earlier studies likely included confounding factors, such as dogs with concurrent illnesses that may have interfered with vaccine response. When Zenrelia was administered at appropriate doses, dogs receiving vaccines achieved an adequate immune response.

Our Updated Hospital Policy

After reviewing the latest research as a veterinary team and discussing the available evidence, our doctors have updated our hospital policy.

Based on the newest data and our internal review, we now feel comfortable administering routine vaccines to dogs that are currently taking Zenrelia. This means most dogs will no longer need to stop their Zenrelia prior to vaccination appointments.

Although the updated research supports this change, it may take some time for the official prescribing label to be updated. Our team will continue monitoring new information and sharing updates with our clients.

What This Means for Your Dog

This change allows us to:

  • Maintain consistent allergy control for dogs who rely on Zenrelia
  • Avoid flare-ups of itching or skin infections that can occur when the medication is stopped
  • Ensure pets remain protected with timely vaccinations

Individual Care Still Matters

As always, every pet is unique. In certain cases, such as young dogs, pets with complex medical histories, or pets with concurrent illnesses, your veterinarian may still recommend an individualized plan.

If your dog is currently taking Zenrelia and is due for vaccines, you can schedule their appointment as usual. Our team will review your pet’s medical history and determine the safest plan for them.

If you have any questions about Zenrelia, vaccinations, or your pet’s allergy management, please contact TotalBond Veterinary Hospital at Paw Creek. We are always happy to help you make the best decisions for your pet’s health.

Thank you for trusting us with your pet’s care.
